Meeting Minutes 12-4-2002

Phone Conference

Present: Eileen Cronin, Matthew Murrie, Dana Olson, Chris Purdef,, Pam Ross, Rick Sleutaris, Rhonda Stanton

1. Mission Statement: Chris Purdef Overall the Mission/Vision Statement was accepted. There was some discussion about whether the Mission and Vision Statements matched one another. Rick suggested that the Vision Statement be narrowed. The idea of focusing on "Education" and "Promoting awareness" as cornerstones of the organization's Vision Statement were recommended, but nothing was settled definitively.

2. Bi-Laws: Donald Parillo and Matthew Murrie Matt's said that his brother Dan is able to advise Friends of Macedonia regarding the bi-laws, but we need to get them done by Christmas so he can look them over then. In order to accomplish this, Matt said he will contact Don to get the ball rolling. Matt is also going to get the contact information for one of his brother's former law school colleagues to Rhonda. Although the organization will be registered in Georgia, it was agreed that these lawyers will still be able to help us. Tasks: Matt: Contact Don and get Denver contact information to Rhonda

3. Officers: Entire Group Officers were elected for Friends of Macedonia President; Don Patillo Vice President: Laura Potts Treasurer: Dana Olson Secretary; Rhonda Stanton In addition, a Board of Directors was established with the following members: Eileen Cronin Matthew Murrie Chris Purdef Pam Ross Rick Sleutaris Others are to be announced. Possible additions include Macedonians as well as RPCVs from Mak groups 1, 2, 3, and 5

4.501C3: Donald Patillo Nothing was reported regarding this matter during the conference Task: Nothing was suggested regarding this matter

5. NPCA: Rick Sleutaris: Rick said that while it is a great idea to cooperate with FoM in Macedonia, there aren't any benefits to legally join them, and the other members agreed. He also said that our affliation with NPCA is dependent upon 10 of the members having a membership to the organization. However, in order for Friends of Macedonia to obtain a portion of our membership fee, we need to wait until the NGO is established. He sent out an email which explains things in further detail.

6.Other Business A. Education: There was some discussion regarding how the organization would operate to fund Macedonian students who wish to study in the United States. One-year and four-year visas were discussed, as well as methods of ensuring students' return to Macedonia upon completion of their studies in the States. A student exchange program was discussed, involving an agency who requires $2,000.00 contribution. Soros will be contacted regarding a donor-desiginated fund to provide scholarships to high school students Matt also mentioned a woman he's been in contact with from the Bitola University. She is applying for grant money and would like us to send her a copy of the bi-laws and Mission/Vision Statements upon their completion. Matt said that she is willing to cooperate with Friends of Macedonia. Tasks: Rhonda: contact Dinah and have her contact the Soros foundation.
